Revisiting Chapters 2-1, 2-5, 2-6, 2-7 and 2-8

In order to avoid end-of-the-year panic and procrastination, we are beginning the practice/review process now to keep concepts fresh in our minds and accessible for our use. These lessons play an integral role in your ability to keep the big math picture in mind and should be investigated with as much focus and effort as possible.

Remember that CLASS CHALLENGE #8 this week is awarded to the class producing the most home nugget exemplars. Try to have your nugget be a part of this group.

Ways to Prepare for Our Summative Assessment on Chapter 8

Students are very clear on the fact that the overarching theme of this chapter was to learn how to factor polynomials. What remains an issue however, is coming up with very focused strategies on how to approach problems when we seem to have so many factoring tools to choose from (i.e. GCF, grouping, difference of squares, perfect square trinomials and finding factors that sum up to specific middle terms)

The two practice tests handed out today in class go a long way in helping you prepare as do the practice tests at the end of chapter 8. The only 'guaranteed' way to be ready for an assessment is to simply put in the time and problem-solve so that none of the problems seems unfamiliar to you.

My mentality is giving an assessment is two-fold:
1. I want to see whether I have done a fair job of teaching the core content and that you have understood it. In effect, your grades are a reflection of my teaching efficiency.
2. I want to see that you can take the content you have learned and apply it to 'new' problem scenarios. This is the essence of critical and analytic thinking and while challenging, it is a neccessity.

All problems that remain from the two sample tests handed out in class today. Just as important will be a commitment to study chapter 8 until you feel prepared for tomorrow's assessment.
