Tonight's assignment(s) reflect an ongoing belief that students need lots of varied exposure to math concepts if they are to have a chance at both understanding and mastery.
The long-term guide to chapter 2 is due tomorrow and students are reminded that it counts as a 50 point quiz grade. The directions were provided last Thursday so much opportunity has been afforded to get it done.
This evening's new challenge is to reinvent and solve 10 word problems from a practice sheet I originally created for students on Tuesday. (there are problems involving test grades and insects, percent changes and solving for specific variables)
Students have done this sort of assignment before and there seems to be general agreement that being forced to keep the characteristics of the problem the same and alter the values and outcome is an invaluable exercise towards true understanding of content.
