Using the Quadratic Equation: More Than Meets the Eye

We are finally at a point where we can begin to discuss whether the quadratic formula is really the cure-all some students think it to be. In reality, the formula is only as effective as the person using it. Like any other formula, there is a story to be told about what its solutions mean and reveal about a quadratic function. The icing on the cake in this lesson we are in will be to make decisions about which solution techniques are most appropriate for given functions.

Use tonight's lesson as a chance to re-examine your use of the formula, what the discriminant means and to tackle some semi-puzzling word problems. Have fun. Seriously.

ALSO: YOU MUST BRING YOUR MATH TEXTBOOK TO CLASS TOMORROW! I AM BEING ASKED TO CONDUCT AN INVENTORY OF BOOKS. I MUST ACTUALLY SEE YOUR COPY WITH MY OWN EYES. Thank you.
