Exponential Functions - Familiar or Novel?

Home Nugget #25 of the 4th Term
Assigned on Tuesday April 28, 2009
Due on Wednesday April 29, 2009

Read pages 502 - 505 on exponential functions. Those of you who remember the book Growing, Growing, Growing from 7th grade will likely recall many of these concepts in great detail. Pay special attention to the examples provided.

Then solve problems 1 - 8 on pages 505 and 506. You will need graph paper in order to complete this assignment.

FCAs
2 points: all problems completed in their entirety. Your effort at the end of the lesson is as evident as at the start.
2 points: evidence/explanations for your thought/solution process is provided for ALL pertinent problems.

Using the Quadratic Equation: More Than Meets the Eye

We are finally at a point where we can begin to discuss whether the quadratic formula is really the cure-all some students think it to be. In reality, the formula is only as effective as the person using it. Like any other formula, there is a story to be told about what its solutions mean and reveal about a quadratic function. The icing on the cake in this lesson we are in will be to make decisions about which solution techniques are most appropriate for given functions.

Use tonight's lesson as a chance to re-examine your use of the formula, what the discriminant means and to tackle some semi-puzzling word problems. Have fun. Seriously.

ALSO: YOU MUST BRING YOUR MATH TEXTBOOK TO CLASS TOMORROW! I AM BEING ASKED TO CONDUCT AN INVENTORY OF BOOKS. I MUST ACTUALLY SEE YOUR COPY WITH MY OWN EYES. Thank you.
